ASUS Eee PC - arrived!

I know, words like boys and toys spring into my mind too....but there you go. We are who we are; I'm just hoping words like pain and death don't spring into Anna's mind..... :-)

The new Asus Eee PC that arrived this morning (before the battery was inserted, hence the rather odd shape; I was too excited to sort out stuff like that before snapping it).

Thanks for the photos.

Now a blow by blow account of your experiences.

Could this handle OpenOffice Impress for disputation, for example ?

Is it adequate for Gmail ?

What about OpenOffice Writer ?

Tell us all. And we mean ALL.

I'll try to do: more photos, screenshots and answers to questions. It does have OpenOffice presentation - is that what you meant? And what would it need for disputation? It can connect to an external monitor so does that mean it can work with a projector? I dunno. btw, writing this on the eee and using a usb mouse - very nice!

That's the kind of thing !

Does it run quickly enough to be able to do a OpenOffice presentation for disputation ?

Is internet fine on it or painfully slow ?

Is it crackerjack or just OK or what ?

The internet runs fine on it, so problems there. It is amazingly fast to start up - 15 seconds is what they claim and is about right. I'll try to find the presentation you sent me and see how it runs - being Open Office it'll run native MS files.

Keyboard is small but I'm getting used to it - already faster on it than I am on the laptop, simply because it's an easier position for the hands, not having to reach over a large area.

I'm hoping to write an article for an appreciative website on the combination of an Eee and a smartphone - I think it's a winning combo but it needs to be thought through, letting each trade off the other.

With the growth of web applications like the Google suite of software machines like the eee PC and wifi access could be almost all you need.

Mind you... the fact that we all drive at 15mph through narrow city streets doesn't stop us having massive cars that can do over 100 and have 49 airbags. Or 4x4s !

Alan, it runs a real full blown Linux distro as far as I am aware. So, no problem to do what you need to do. I believe that one of the models has got 1G Ram, so it must be pretty fast.

and Bible Software ?

minternational said...

No Bible software that I know of.....yet. But it may well be out there somewhere.

There is an open source Bible software for Linux: see the SWORD project. The version for the eee PC should be called Bible time I think.

Thanks, Emmanuel, that's really good to know.

Emmanuel has migrated from windows to linux - for questions about that he is ton homme.

Ah, c'est bon. Btw, the Eee started to make a noise today - it is the quietest machine ever, as though it had been conceived in a monastery (well, I know that sorta thing doesn't go on in such places but you know what I mean.....) and today it started to whir ever so quietly. Mind you, it was after an hour's solid use - I guess it was a fan kicking-in to cool it's fevered brow.

But still far quieter than a normal loppie.

Cute !

It sounds like a good little gizmo.

why did you sell it

Because I didn't use it enough to justify keeping it....and there was no way I was going to let my eldest son get his hands on it!
