...if there is any connection between the triple-groaning of Romans 8 (creation; Christians; the Spirit) and the pains of childbearing of Genesis 3:16? If there was, maybe one could throw 1 Timothy 2:15 into the mix too. Clearly a job for someone more capable than me!

Not sure about the groaning, but have you seen Bruce Winter’s article (EN, Dec.05, p.15)? He suggests the prevalence of severe contraception, abortion and other measures - in order to avoid the effects on the body of childbirth, could be the background against which we read 1Timothy 2. In other words, the Christian decision is to go through with childbirth in dependence upon God (this being evidence of a life-changing faith = saved) rather than killing the child because it is inconvenient.
